Superintendent Bill Korach announces retirement, will continue working, will donate salary to LOSD Foundation

For Immediate Release

February 8, 2011

LAKE OSWEGO – Superintendent Bill Korach announced his imminent retirement Monday night, asking the Lake Oswego School Board to support his intention to continue working at a significantly reduced salary that he will donate to the LOSD Foundation to fund a teaching salary.

“Having been the superintendent of schools in the Lake Oswego School District for 24 years, I strongly believe I can continue to serve as the district superintendent on a reduced contract with the support of my skilled and experienced administrative team,” Dr. Korach said in a letter to the School Board.

“Given the magnitude of the district’s economic challenges, I feel a responsibility to offer my continued service and commitment while making a substantial contribution to the financial support of the district. This commitment would be my way of thanking the district and the community for providing me with the opportunity to live such a meaningful and rewarding professional life.”

The School Board approved the superintendent’s request at its February 7 meeting. Dr. Korach will officially retire within the next month, and will remain as district superintendent at least through the 2011-12 school year. He has indicated his willingness to serve the district for the remainder of his current contract term, which runs through 2012-13.

“The Lake Oswego community owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Korach for the tremendous contributions he has made to our schools in his 24 years as superintendent” said Curt Sheinin, Lake Oswego School Board Chair. “His offer to retire and essentially work for free is just the latest example of his dedication to the district. The School Board has no desire to see his tenure come to an end, especially given the challenges of the current environment. We are grateful for Bill’s continued exceptional leadership, and for the generous personal contributions he will be making to the district in his post-retirement.”

In addition to funding a teaching salary with the donation of his reduced salary, Superintendent Korach will also support a classified employee salary with the savings between his current compensation and his reduced compensation.
